Bump hood lock

Has anyone found a way to lock the hood on a Bump? Other than a chain and lock.

I have seen several people use hood pins with a pad lock. They are also running with a shaved hood and core support. Something could be fab'ed up I suppose to do this without shaving parts.

Some talk about modifying latch and cable release from upper 70's models that had the locking release inside the cab. I have never seen it done though.

Locking hood latch kit (D8TZ-16700-A) introduced in 1978 F100/350 & Bronco as an extra cost option, could be retrofitted to 1973/77 F100/350's as the non locking hood latch is the same 1973/79.

This locking hood latch will not work on 1972 or earlier trucks.

2x Bill.

I remember a while ago Orich was thinking of seeing if he could fab something to make it work. Bumps and Dents are opposite though. Bumps have the latch on the hood. Dents have it on the radiator core support via a hood latch bracket.

I sense a good business opportunity for an enterprising and/or young whippersnapper to come up with a low-buck solution as to the unavailability of an locking engine compartment device for the 1967-72 F-Series trucks.

Patent the device and license it to... LMC Truck? Naaah. Dennis Carpenter or National Parts Depot!

.. or score the system from a 91-96 F-Series and adapt it to work.

HMMM. You're right Hio. Let me see if I can help some brain cells out there.
I have read on here of guys putting Dent core supports on their Bumps. Now this core support would have the correct holes in it to mount a Dent hood latch and it's mounting bracket. The question is, where would the latch be mounted in relation to the underside structure of the hood?
2nd. On a Dent there is hood latch "hook" that the latch grabs on to mounted to the underside of the hood. It is basically a steel rod, shaped like a "L",the ends of it flattened, and holes for bolts drilled in those flat areas. A blacksmith like my Buddy up in Camp Verde AZ can heat up a steel rod, bend it in the L shape or whatever shape is required, flatten the ends, and drill holes there. Someone would just have to map out the shape and dimensions required.

I think it could be worked out with the proper core support and some fabrication.

Wink Bump hood lock

Thanks for all of the replys. As I thought there is nothing available to lock the hood other a chain and lock or hood pins. I thought I would ask the question just in case there was anything out there. I do have an idea and it works on paper. My next step will be to build a prototype and see if it works. I'll post results with pics. Anyone know a patten Lawyer.

Hmmm... I'll take up the challenge... using the Bump core support. I'll figger out something... maybe using all Ford parts.

No, sorry I cannot, my 10/88 final issue of the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog is on microfiche, but...

Here's the 1978/79 Bronco pic from the 11/88 final issue of the 1973/79 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog (from the hipoparts.com C/D).

As you know, F100/350 & 1978/79 Bronco use the exact same hood lock parts, and...

D5DZ-16914-A .. Locking Hood Lock Cable-Less Cylinder w/Key / Obsolete

1973/79 F100/350 / 1975/76 Granada/Monarch / 1978/79 Bronco.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
E7UZ-16700-A (replaced D8TZ-16700-B) .. Locking Hood Latch / Obsolete

1973/79 F100/350 / 1975/91 Econoline / 1978/79 Bronco.

Thanks Bill.
Yep, that ends up being the same pic I wanted posted. There ya go Hio. Since you have a Dent and a Bump you can compare notes between the two. With Bill's pic now all can see what I was talking about. The 16700 latch and it's 16864 latch support are bolted to the 16138 radiator core support. The 16700 latch grabs on the 16900 "hook" (Ford's term not mine) which is bolted to the hood. This all is opposite of a Bump. The hardest part of this adaptation would be the 16900. Hio, if you can graph paper map out how you need the 16900 to be I can have my buddy in Camp Verde make it for you. PM me when you got it and I'll give you his address or a fax number. I know you could fab the angle of the dangle. Not sure if you can heat up the ends of it and flatten them out like he can. A forge is a beautiful thing. You guys should see the Bottle Openers he makes out of 1/2 a horse shoe. With a horse head on the handle side end he forms in to it.

Maybe this might help a little, I have a 73 core support on mine. Here is a picture of it with the 70 latch on it.
