I have a 400 in a 1980 mustang with an auto trans. I want to install a manual transmission like a 4 speed top loader. I seen a bellhousing on eBay for a borg warner. My question is did a bellhousing from a borg warner will accept a top loader or i should just go with the borg warner trans and bell? I dont know to much about trany. Any suggestions ???
The BW T10 and the Ford top loader are interchangeable. That is, if the T10 has the Ford "butterfly" transmission to bell pattern.
The bell on ebay, do they give the manufacturer and model number?
FWIW, imo, keep the automatic. Easier on everything, quicker to shift and you won't have to reinvent thinks like clutch linkage and a shifter.
Plus, a good toploader is going to set you back a bit--the days of finding a solid usable box in the junkyard for $500 or less are over. Sit down and check out what a "new" one goes for:
Check the depth. I thought small block top loaders used a different input shaft length than the bb models. Not sure. Note what he says here about bell depth. Truck bells might be too deep:
Look for a 429 Toploader bell and then pick up a $130 spacer plate on e-Bay for a Tremec and bolt a Tremec 3550/TKO/TKO500/TKO600 to the 400. For the clutch linkage, there are several companies that sell hydraulic clutch kits for the Fox body Mustang and there are plenty of choices for converting a Tremec/Toploader to a hydraulic throwout bearing or hydraulicly actuated throwout bearing. Lots of options, just send a weekend searching the internet.
Thanks a lots i really apreciate it. Did the 429 bell have to come from a car or a truck or it's the same ?
Car, I don't believe Ford ever installed a 429 in a truck....if they did, it would have most likely used the same bell housing as would have later been used on the 460.
If you want to put a top loader in, the car bell is the one. It is listed in one of the links I gave you.
The 429 truck engine is the same basic engine, but uses a different crank, flywheel and much larger clutch than the car engine. I doubt the truck bell would work, although it would be easier to find methinks.

Here is a kit that fits the Fox body Mustang and will work with a Tremec 3550 and various TKO models. The 3550 is no longer made but are fairly easy to find used. This kit can be used with a manual bellhousing that used a clutch fork...it does not require a bellhousing that was set up for a hydraulic slave cylinder like used on Ford trucks in the 1980's.
