I have developed a leak coming from the top, driver side, rear of my engine and I could not figure out where it was coming from. I took it to a reputable shop for diagnosis and they tell me that the rear leak is coming from the transmission lines. The weird thing is I never thought the leak looked like ATF. They also told me that it looks like the stock radiator/cooler has been bypassed so I have no cooler.
Should I assume that the stock internal cooler failed and that is why the PO bypassed it? Also is there a decent write up on deleting these lines and running soft transmission lines to a aftermarket cooler?
Climb up on the top of the engine with a flash light and look around the oil filter and turbo area of the engine. If it is dry there the next place would be to look back by the HPOP!
As far as I know there is no transmission fluid on the top of the engine block. Do you see any leaking from the lines coming out of the transmission?
So the PO by passed the external transmission filter up by the radiator?
I could not find any leaks looking on the top side. I looked all around the turbo, but all I could find was oil running down the bellhousing and some on the side of the block.
I couldn't really see the HPOP, I just looked all around the turbo/valley area with my flashlight. Mine is a late '04 so the IPR is up front. Anywhere else I should look?
Put a load of dye in the oil and see what shows up
with the UV light. Also the best time is at night in a dark
driveway of in the shop with the lights out. You have to
treat for about 18 quarts of oil.
Transmission cooler : The shop could be mistaking the
lines that route the fluid from the internal cooler to the
external one that sits between the intercooler and the radiator.
I can see if I can find a digram for you 2004 F-series right?
EDIT : Found the silly thing. I found some 2006 diagrams trhat
might be better to show you how it should be setup. Just be
aware that they are the 2006 years
2004 trucks
