I've been doing some reading on then Banks Transcommand.. Seems like a good product. Just wondering if anyone uses this with a V10 (05') and if it is worth the money. I do lots of towing and I hate how the 4R100 shifts so softly. Besides an internal shift kit, are there any other options or suggestions?
For that kind of money I would go with a tuner and tunes from Five Star. It has modified shift points and more bang for your buck. From reading around, everyone that has used one has been happy with it.
I'm another happy 5 starer. I run my tow tune when towing and it shifts solid and fast. In fact it shifts so different I don't like how it drives when I am not towing and using a tow tune. I ran my 87 octane economy tune for about an hour when towing and thought I was going uphill into the wind the whole time. I pulled over and switched to my 91 octane tow tune and was happy again. My point is they really are able to make the vehicle do different things based on what you want and what will make you happy.
Sorry that I didn't save the links but I had read a while back a few reports from owners who were less than happy with the trans command from Banks. I am not a Banks basher, I run their headers and love them and have recommended them to several others here!
I too use the SCT tuner with custom 5Star tunes, they are a great upgrade and I would strongly suggest that you look into them for your V-10. I use the 87 Octane Econo tune whenever I am running solo, it will let you be in OD and locked up by 35 MPH! For my towing chores (11,000 lb TT) I have found that the Performance tunes work better for me and my driving style than the Tow tunes. For my situation the Perf tunes will hold onto OD with more throttle opening at a given speed under high load conditions, my V-10 makes enough power to carry OD on most grades so it works better for me than the Tow tunes which downshift too soon for my setup and driving style. I just pulled back home to Philly from Charlotte NC and was in a little bit of a time crunch so I hammered it more than usual (total moving average speed over the 569 miles home was 60.1 MPH) with many of the mountain grades on I-81 pulled over 70 MPH using the 89 Octane tune and 89 Octane fuel and it still pulled down 8.2 MPG for that trip!
The transmission performance increase with the 5Star Tunes is quite remarkable and makes the towing work so much more comfortable and efficient plus you also get a few more HP from the tunes and that is always a good thing.
