When I discovered my timing tensioner problem, I also noticed that my timing cover had been damaged and repaired. the chain had chewed completely through and someone had welded it shut and ground it back to the normal shape.
Must be a fad for these motors. These kids with their torn-up jeans and timing covers...

I think running it out of oil finished things off.
