I Haven't had a whole lot of time to do anything with the truck. I'm thinking before I spend their money on everything needed, it would be a good idea to check the oil pressure and get an idea of what the mains look like.
Anyone know what the oils pressure spec is on the 5.4 3v?
Minimum oil pressure should be 25 PSI at operating temperature. At 21 PSI, the phasers won't have enough pressure to function properly. I believe the older 2V had a minimum pressure of 20 PSI, which is where I would suspect the other components will start malfunctioning.
At hot idle I'm seeing a minimum reading of ~28 psi. At 2000 rpm, I'm in the mid 50s.
It does dip closer to 25 psi when you first let off some the throttle from 2000 rpm.
They are running the recommended 5w-20. Should it run 5-30 for the remainder of its life?
It looks like it would be a safe bet to replace the chains, guides, tensioners , & phasers.
Maybe I will get lucky at the tensioners will be leaking and causing some of the lower pressure.
That is on the low end, but it's not terrible. You might try to use 5w-30 to see if it improves a bit. Does the gauge jump around a lot, or is it somewhat steady?
Going to go ahead with the work. New chains, guides, tensioners, phasers, timing cover gaskets & seal, valve cover gaskets, ignition coil pig tails, and a couple of injector pig tails.
The oil will be changed to 5w-30.
Hopefully they have learned their lesson. Oh who am I kidding.
Finally made some headway. Between being sick, the family being sick, and work, I havent had any time to mess with it. got the cover off tonight. The timing guide was broke on both sides, One was actually in pieces rattling around. Both chains are very loose depending on where you are in the rotation. Hope to start reassembly tomorrow.
Wow. Broken chain guides are really common on these. It's the reason why I want to switch to new guides made from billet aluminum on mine, along with cast iron tensioners.
Be sure all the pieces are out! This happened to my vehicle under a previous owner, and they did not chase down all the loose pieces. two chunks got into an oil passage, starved the heads of oil and ruined both heads and cams. You'll probably have to drop the oil pan in order to find the pieces that drop straight down. At least that's what I had to do...
Yeah, it's really the start of a bad day if you put all the pieces together on the table and find that some are missing. It's not the easiest thing in the world to drop the pan on these.
Finished the truck up last night. She sounds great. Nice and quiet, tons of power, and no longer has any check engine lights. Ended up replacing 5 of the cop pigtails and 3 injector pig tails.
Ran it for close to half an hour with the oil pressure gauge on it. Cold It maintains 65-70 psi. Hot was a steady 38 psi.
Currently has fresh 5w-30 and filter in it. Gonna have the change it again in 100 miles or so.
This poor truck was hungry. The timing chain tried to eat the cover.
How do I attach pictures on here? I don't see the option like I have on other forums.
