This might be an odd question, but does anyone know if it's possible to put the large external hubs from a Dana 44HD onto a later high pinion Dana 44?
I have a low pinion Dana 44HD axle out of a 76/77 Highboy and a high pinion Dana 44 out of a 1978 F250...both have ball joints and disc brakes. At first glance it looks like I could swap out everything from the steering knuckles out (knuckles, spindles, bearings, hubs, etc.).
Anyone know if this can be done?

 

I've been doing some research on other off-road forums and I think it can be done. Sounds like guys are using the 44HD parts (from the knuckles out) to upgrade the high pinion Dana 44 1/2 ton axles to the 8 lug hubs.
Would still be interested to hear from anyone who has done this (or seen it done).

 

Yes, everything from the knuckle's out are inter-changeable with those 2 axles. My buddy did it on his 79 bronco. Wanted the 8-lug setup while thinking the dana44HD parts would add some additional strength.
