Hey guys, i currently have a Borg Warner t-18 transmission, id like to swap it out for a 5 speed transmission but am unsure of which one to swap it too. i have a M5OD sitting in my garage right now but am reconsidering, thought id get some advise from some people that know more than me on this subject. id like it to be as durable as the t18 but understand that it might not be possible. also im not surte on my clutch size which im not sure how to check. thank you all for your time and responses.
The M5OD has a tall first and reverse. Good for very light duty, not so good for heavy towing or loads.
The ZF 5 speed has a lower first, though not as low as your T18. 5th is OD.
Look for F250 and up trucks with the 300, 302 and 351W to find one to fit your truck. Check the speedo set up too, as iirc, later models did away with the speedo drive. They are specific to 4x2 or 4x4 so buy one that matches your truck.
Since both were OEM transmissions in '88, you should be able to find everything you need in the donor vehicle if you go m or z.
cool. so just to be clear, the m5od in my garage will do just fine as long as i dont abuse it too much. im mainly switching to the 5 speed to get better mileage on the highway so my wallet appreciates me more
if youre daily driving this truck, or driving it like a daily driver when you do hop in it, run the mazda trans. the zf5's 3 acceleration gears just plain suck.
you can get any clutch that is for the 1.0625" input shaft. that is of course, if you buy a flywheel associated with said clutch. a lot of the flywheels nowadays have provisions for all sizes that came in the trucks. so go with the largest one your local store stocks.
One issue with these is the throw out bearing. It is an concentric hydraulic unit, and can be fussy about bleeding, matching to the trans because of course there are several versions, and marrying to your master might be an issue as well.
BTW, check you firewall where you clutch master mounts. They flex and crack or rust and crack in '80s trucks.
