R&D pump question
i have the n/a ip's with banks turbos and intercoolers.at 8 BTDC (or higher) i'll get a few light puffs of smoke between shifts as is.
there's no call or reason for anymore fuel (it wouldn't increase power, because it would simply go unburnt, look like an old junker, needlessly harm mother earth, hurt fuel economy and shorten the engines life with high egts.)
if i wanted to introduce anymore fuel,i would first need to introduce more air first with a larger turbo than the banks.
when engine building and tuning, things must match if you want an efficient setup.
if your looking for 300 ponies, then none of the turbo kits are anything at all that your after.you'll need to build the engine far past navistar's original plans lol and bolt on a custom turbo kit.
that said,it's not exactly a slug.it can get along just fine.can your idi run 0-60 in approx 10 secs when loaded 8500 gross? if so,then isn't this really enough? seriously? lol.

if ya wanna go fast (real fast) then nothing beats a classic car with a built up nasty 429 or 460.

if im easy on it, im "priuskid" compliant.
aftermarket rebuilt pumps are calibrated (or should be) to give you a desired fuel flow.
why spend the money on a high flow IP if youre just going to turn it down?

i have no usefull info on R&D's designs.
do what you wish.
FYI companys use catch phrases like "Stage 1" to attract the eye of a potential buyer.
i was taught that when talking about injectors, you talk about flow/pop rate only.
ask any old timer diesel guru about "stages"
I am R&D, so I can tell you straight up all the details.
My company doesn't use terms like "Stage 1" to attract a potential buyer, my company uses terms like "Stage 1" as an example at which stage that particular part is modified or classified as in terms of a power goal, or level. The stage 1 injectors are modified slightly from stock to deliver more fuel, plain and simple, its not rocket science, its a simple modification that I do in house, and that's why I don't charge $600 for a set that is probably the same mod (Or less as far as anybody knows), like a known "competitor". I have documented any modified part that is sold through R&D, AND tested, before everybody's eyes, right here on this very forum, its not black magic here.... Nobody has put more time and energy into testing aftermarket IDI parts than myself, and I will stand by that statement with every bit of my being.
You can talk to any "Old guru" you want, and chances are you get an earful of complete garbage that doesn't mean anything and doesn't make sense, but because they are old, and have assembled stock injectors for 30 years, they must know everything.
I will be frank, and I don't mean to use this post as the catalyst, but I am getting awfully tired of the same 5 people, not necessarily on this forum, but particularly the other, who live in complete ignorance of the actual level of IDI performance today versus 4 years ago, and that isn't chance, its been a drive to be accomplished as such, planned, and successful. We are on the verge of a numbers verified 400+whp IDI, but for some reason, the person who has sunk his heart and soul, sacrificed thousands of hours of family time, worked himself sick pushing and pushing the platform, in no way can have any advantage over some crotchety old timer that has never once even tried anything achieved in recent IDI history, but somehow knows that anything labeled "Stage-X" cant possibly be anything but a sales gimmick... This is the kind of garbage, that not only drives me even harder to make things happen, just so I can throw it in your faces, but also has me rethink why I am doing any of this... Thankfully, there are more people who think like me out there....

If by opening it up, you mean dropping head studs in, sure. Otherwise, weve been to 300fwhp on a 6.9 with head bolts, ATS kit, and cranked uhaul pump... Yes, with video, and dyno graphs.
The idea that adding more fuel (Black smoke essentially) doesn't add more power, and that simply bolting a bigger turbo on will do the job is quite laughable. Diesel fuel makes the most power at just under 15:1 AFR, Diesels smoke pretty hard at 18:1 AFR, and are nearly clean at 22:1. Unless you are running 15:1 AFR, you WILL make more power with more fuel... 15:1 AFR will turn the goddamn day to night... Now That being said, more air utilizes the fuel, by being burned better, and a bigger turbo, especially on an IDI, is always going to be better, IF you can spool it. I tested an HX35 right here on this forum in front of everybody, and it burned 100% clean nearly the whole powerband. I dropped a larger turbo in its place, it was a little dirtier (Not much at all), But it made more power and torque across the entire power band, WITHOUT touching the pump.
As far as turbo kits go, you can buy a turbo kit that will do over 300whp right of the shelf... Its one of those other things you have conveniently overlooked but has been tested in front of your eyes...
As far as the 429/460 comment goes... WHY?? What damn difference does it make if Im making 400hp from an IDI or a 429?? The difference is that I and OTHERS, WANT to do it with an IDI... My question to you, is WHY are you so opposed to it?? What difference does it make to you?

FYI that 360 was a solid 275 by todays standards, and about 200 at the wheels....

your doing a good job with the old platform.you've got nothing to worry about.keep on keeping on brother.
Listen man, I don't mind critique at all, I thrive on it, nothing drives me harder.
The issues I have, that result in the above posts, is literally the ignorance... If somebody wanted to come in and question anything I do or produce, I would welcome it with open arms, I love explaining it. But when complete crap is thrown out there, by people who simply don't know, don't care to know, or even worse, purposefully try and demean, it really gets to me... That's all.
If you have an issue with anything I do, confront me directly, thats the best most straightforward way to get the direct straightforward answer to anything you want, that's the way I do it.

seems like the "stage" comment really makes you mad.
guess thats an issue you need to wrestle your inner demons with.
i know very little about your products. this is why i could not provide any useful information. this was not an attempt to discredit you for all the hard work you seem to want credit for.
i have seen a dyno sheet of your work, and its impressive. maybe one day all of the IDI subjects in the land will bow down to you.
you can judge me anyway you want for the way i was taught, but this is what makes sense to me. so yea thats what im going to go with.
call your products anything you wish. ITS YOUR BUSINESS. not mine.
i know of what competition of which you speak.
YES i did spend over 1200 dollars with said competitor.
you know why?
it was not over some female soap opra that people make it out to be.
it was not because "their products are superior to the ones you make"
it was not because someone on a forum said this was the only place worthy,
IT WAS BECAUSE OF CUSTOMER SERVICE.
i did try to contact R&D for information.
got no answer, no reply, nada.
i called them, and talked to him for 45 minutes about my concerns, my needs, and my application.
they got the cash.
plain and simple.
AMERICA.

Thumbs up!
Customer service is more than taking orders you cant fill because you don't have time in the day... Its not a Soap Opera, its reality.
Cash is second place to me, I don't have to survive off of false claims and fake numbers to make my business survive... That's why I work a day job, so I can enjoy doing this, for what its supposed to be... Im glad you got what you wanted in the end, that's what its all about.
Oh wait?
