The tires of my 1997 F250 are superior in balance and tire quality to those on my just-bought 2007 F250. Both trucks have the heavy factory aluminum rims. Can I simply swap the rims out (with the tires on them of course)?
The 2007 rims are hub piloted. The 1997 rims might be stud piloted.
You can tell by the lug nuts. If the lugnuts on your 1997 are conical, then your 1997 rims will not have the right hub bore diameter to center itself correctly with the non conical lugnuts of your 2007.
You can't swap the lug nuts because the studs have a different thread pitch.
There are also other differences. You asked a great question, as a lot of guys just assume that 8 lugs is 8 lugs. Not anymore.
And perhaps one of the reasons why Ford changed to 8x170mm from 8x6.5" may have been to prevent interchange of hub piloted (aka hub centric) versus stud piloted wheels.
