We have a 2002 Explorer 4.6 and the fuse for the coils keeps popping. We also have gone through 3 coils on the #3 cylinder that have blew up. the coil is all cracked and split at the base. If I disconnect the #3 coil and the fuse don't blow Please help. Brian
Have you measured the voltage to the coil and tried replacing the spark plug on that cylinder?
Next time you replace the coil you might try putting the new coil on a different cylinder and putting one of the existing coils on cylinder #3 to see if the new coil blows or if the used coil on #3 still blows. Maybe the coils you are getting have defects. Are they Motorcraft or aftermarket?
You might want to check compression on cylinder #3 and make sure that it's getting fuel. Maybe it has low compression or poor fueling and that's straining the coil to attempt to fire a spark plug that doesn't have a decent compressed air/fuel mixture.
