just bought 89 f150 w/5.0, drove it a few times and it died this a.m. in the driveway. it will turn over and there is gas in the fuel rail, but it will not fire. any thuoghts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. thanx in advance.
I would suspect either the pickup coil, or the EEC box. They're both about 15 bucks from Autozone. I'd start with the pickup coil. But i don't know if I would listen to me, I've got my own ignition problems that I'm trying to solve.
Maybe a full tuneup might be in order. Plugs, wires, cap and rotor and a good after market coil... Make sure your battery cables are corroded either...
Try here
Enter your vehicle info then click on quick find. Then click on the letter "I" then select "ignition coil" for instructions on how to test the coil.
Not sure exactly how to check the EEC Module, I always just replace it. But others here can help you with that
The "EEC" is the main engine computer, and it's $180 reman/$250 new. To test it, you pull the codes. The "TFI" is the ignition module, and the Haynes manual tells how to test the whole ignition system (including the coil) so you know exactly what to buy the first time.
The most common cause of total no spark problems is the TFI module mounted on the distributor. In the "old days" it was called the ignition module. Probably failed due to hot soak after shutdown. FORD had a warranty problem a few years ago, but most work well for years. Only problem is you can't tell when they will quit!!!
before you spend a dime, as pointless as this sounds, clean your battery posts and make sure your terminals themselves aren't corroded. i do realize its turning over just fine - just try it.
