Armrest color suggestions

I'd like advice on the best way to dye a pair of plain black armrests for my '65 Custom Cab either blue or white. Can anyone offer a suggestion? Thanks!

SEM brand would be my choice. A good online place to buy is TCP Global. I see a white and a blue in their aerosols.

be sure to use the SEM cleaner and prep before spraying the SEM dye or it will wear off easily . the prep softens the surface for a few minutes to let the dye sink in and not just lay on the surface .

When I think "stain" I think of wood, where the underlying color or grain becomes part of the new finish. How full is the color change when one "stains" a black arm rest to a much lighter color, such as the OP? Does it really cover? Seems the only aftermarket arm rests available are either black or red, which just doesn't match my light blue ones.

I've had great luck with SEM brand. People use it on vinyl and leather seats and as long as you follow the directions closely and do what TxStang2010 suggested, too, you'd probably be happy. You can get custom colors mixed and put into spray cans, too. It's a dye so it adheres and penetrates to some extent. It goes on very thin, not at all like a paint. Very flexible finish. Just make sure it is clean and using an adhesion promoter would help as mentioned.

I know I have some NOS blue armrests around here somewhere, too, just not finding them yet.

If you can spare these armrests- and can find 'em- I'd sure be interested in buying, that is if you'll consider selling.
Thanks

Even though the spray dye used for this job will stick and stay flexible, it will eventually start to wear off unless you use a bonder. I use 'Bulldog'. Most of your better automotive paint supply places will have it. Or you can try online. It's used often by professionals.

armrest colors

If you look through sources for early falcon parts, you will find them available in a light tan or ivory color. They are much better to dye and are the exact same as the F100 armrests. Spray Vinyl dye , after properly prepping the surface, will then look great.

Trying to spray dye a black armrest to a lighter color is difficult to say the least. Just my opinion.

Below is the a web link showing the Bulldog product. I have used this stuff many times on vinyl. It is the adhesion you need before using a good vinyl spay dye. Vinyl dye sprays on just like it would if you are using a can of spray paint. I do however agree with a previous post, its much easier to change the color on a light colored arm rest. The Bulldog does help to seal out the original color. Bulldog®
