Hello all. I have a 90 f-250 that currently has 4.10 gears on a 4 speed tranny. Top speed on my truck is about 45 miles an hour without really making her work. I bought a parts truck a few months ago and plan on doing a swap on the front and rear end. The gear ratio on the parts truck is 3.55. I don't really know a lot about rear end gears but I do know that the 4.10's wont work for this project to be a daily driver, but I am not sure if going to the 3.55 would take away to much to keep it from pulling what I need to pull. All I really pull with it is my 10,000 lb 5th wheel camper. Any advise will help. THX.
if your top speed is only 45 mph, something is seriously wrong. my 88 no overdrive with 4.10 gears has a top speed of 80 mph.
is the truck a 4 wheel drive?
with a top speed of 45 mph, i bet the transfer case in in low gear.
i had thought the same thing. I may have a low gear in the transfer case, but if I put the truck in 4 lo I can tell that its in 4 lo. It definitely makes a change on the gear ratio when I have it in. Is it possible that someone changed the gearing in the t-case.
my f450 w/5.13 has a much higher top speed than 45 mph.i dunno how fast it could go but i don't think it would struggle at hwy speeds of 65/70 here.she'd be screaming sure and getting horrible economy but could do it.i keep her around 45-50.edit,but yeah i do have od though, but still.somethings up with yours.
whats happening exactly at 45 mph? do you have a tach in the truck?
and no,i wouldn't swap in 3.55's in an idi truck for a 10k lb 5ver.especially if your n/a.
I don't want to insult you 89/90, but are you sure you aren't driving a 5 speed tranny in 4th gear? it was available that year, and it would help explain your gearing issue. At what rpm are you hitting 45 mph?
very close to the same, but the E40D does have a slightly taller OD gear, making it #1 economy trans to own for hwy driving with just a whisker lower rpms than that of the zf5 trucks.
i don't like to brag about this, but i like to brag about it but get this; i once pulled in 17 mpg @ 55 mph with chip truck running a whole tank down I95.an 8200 lb DRW,4x4,enclosed box truck with the 7.3l/E4OD combo.
wanna see a pic of her? well of course you do lol!
