Rear end question

The drive train is actually an 85. The motor was originally a 6.9, but before I got the truck that was replaced with an 88 7.3. The truck is definatly a 4 speed, I have thought about getting a zf5 tranny for the 5 speed to help give me an od thinking that it would be better. I don't have a tach hooked up but the truck sounds like its running hard as hell and if I get off the throttle it does fall back hard as if I was in a low gear and hammer to the floor and let the throttle go. I am headed to the scrap yard in the morning to get a diesel tach. This truck has been a project. The body is an 90 f-150 sitting on the 85 frame with a motor from an 88. So I am trying to work out all the bugs but I will try to get an accurate rpm rate for the speed that I am going. but I have heard before that I should be able to do 65 around the 2800 rpm's. If I take it to 65 she is def running harder than it should. But I will give an update when I have the working tach.
