2008 f450 head ache whiteish/grey SMOKE !!!! FIXED

i have one of these in england and it is smokeing

6.4L SUPER DUTY F450

its had cat/dpf/egr delete
has h+s tuner
all proper upgrade pipes etc
no engine codes

the problem is it smokes, i got it like that...cheep

when its cold there is no problem, once warmed up and you drive it there is white/grey smoke coming out and it takes a while for it to clear if you just idle the engine.

no loss of coolant
oil in the engine is fresh and golden colored
oily on the downpipe is black and wet.

turbos were taken off today and show no signs of wear just a tiny bit of oil on the exhaust turbine

its been mentioned today by the previous owner that it started doing this straight after his friend replaced the 4 heater plugs and wiring on the odd number bank.

it has been mentioned about ccv (crank case ventilation) but how ? is there something that could get trapped to cause this ?

these are rare in england so nobody has any expertise

thanks in advance

After the plugs? Did anyone check to verify they are tight?

Did any of the plugs come out damaged?

The color of the smoke does not sound like coolant to me. If you smell the smoke it will have a slight sweet odor if it is coolant, if it is fuel it will have a strong oder that also will burn/irritate your eyes. This can be a little more difficult to a person not use to the difference between the two.

The fact that it smokes more when it is warm could be a loss of compression causing the fuel not to burn at operating temperature, or possibly a fuel injector issue , either would need to be addressed with the proper scan tool not a code reader.

The fact if it is true, that the issue started after changing the glow plugs would raise suspicion to that repair. That should be checked first if the result of the scan indicates an issue on the odd bank, which should be shared with the person performing the diagnostic.

Be cautious when it comes to the CCV or blow-by seen coming out of the oil fill. There is a proper procedure to test this and without the proper equipment a visual inspection can be misleading to the actual condition of the engine.

What do you mean ... "oil on the down pipe"? There isn't any oil on the down pipe?

The PCV is going to wet the inside of your intake with oil. You'll see this if you pop off an intercooler boot. Normal.

sorted thanks

turbos taken off and put on a test rig.......oil seal in high pressure turbo leaking on the exhaust side and oozing oil into exhaust system.

when the exhaust gets hot and the oil burns slowly it starts creating whiteish\grey smoke....leave it idleing and the exhaust cools down and stops smoking giving the idea its cleared through

such a small amount of oil leaking doesnt show as using oil

we have ford ids and vcm2
