Front wheel drive?

What's the opinion on trying to put a front wheel drive train in the bed of a coe? I don't want the bed to be real long , so I thought this might be an option.

It's been done. Back in the 80's when the COE craze bagan, Olds Toronado and Cad Eldorado were popular swaps in the bed. FWD drivetrain package now driving the real wheels under a tilt deck flatbed. A lot of them used a fake wooden cargo box to cover the power unit. It definitely frees up a lot of space in the cab making driving a lot more comfortable.

There is a guy in North Albuquerque Acres who has such a truck (local to us, Fish). I haven't seen it real lately, but I believe it had a BBC with a Toronado transaxle. It was a full-on show quality vehicle, the rear deck wasn't real useful with the engine cover.

Depending on what type bed you are using, you may want to check the track width of the early Cad/Olds units. They were pretty wide...

As mentioned, the Eldo and Toronados were used quite a bit. GMC even used the Toronado set-up in motorhomes for awhile. The Caddy's used the 500ci engine with the TH425 transaxle, the Toro's used the 455ci with the TH425. I think the TH425 was chain driven and pretty tough...well, tough enough to use in a motorhome.
At one time people would make car carriers out of Eldos and Toros. They'd cut the back of the car off and build a low flat deck.

I'm not sure what the track width of the transaxle is. I do remember the wheel had tons of offset on them though. It would probably work out alright in a coe. Right now there is a 1973 Caddy Eldo at the Pull-a-Part wrecking yard on south broadway.....at least it was there last weekend

Another option is to put the engine/transmission in backwards coupled to a Casale V drive under the cab, and then with driveshaft to your rear axle.
Here are some pictures from the Casale website.Home
