I have a 99 Expedition 4x4 Eddie Bauer...with the LLS system ..last night came out Rear end is sitting almost on the ground...fron end is sitting normal...my compressor is not coming on anymore...I messed with it for about a hour last night ...I have power to the compressor, Red thick Wire, Black wire is ground, there are two other wires down there one is a ground and the other one Blue I think if I run a jumper wire to it the compressor makes a click noise...like the solonoid is trying to kick on but wont...any other suggestions before I order a new compressor for this thing...I traced all the air lines and they seem to be in goo shape not noticing any cracks or anything ..about 2 days ago the compressor was acting strange ..keep coming on and running for ever ...does it sound like the compressor has just burned itself up.
I gotta have this thing fixed by next week leaving for Canada for a fishing trip and using it to tow my boat up there
thanks everyone in advance
Several of us have had a similar problem. There's a fitting that connects two air hoses - Compressor---->connection------>rear springs. When this connecter rots and cracks, the rear end will sit real low. Since the air just runs out of the cracks, the compressor will keep trying to fill the rear springs.
The connector in question is located right under the air filter housing. Remove the whole housing to get a clear view. There's a hose that runs along the driver side outside frame rail, and connects to a "fill solonoid". Trace that hose up into the engine compartment, and you'll find the fitting in question. Inspect it closely for cracks. The new and improved fitting is available from your dealer for about $22.
If the compressor was running nonstop, then it's likely that it burned itself out. Here's a link for a replacement compressor:
Thanks for the info, I did check the fitting on the drivers side under the air filter it looked pretty good but went ahead and replaced that , ordered a New Compressor thanks for the link I actually found a place that sells them for 180 brand new out of Arizona, but I will hold onto the link if any other problems arise. Should have the new compressor this afternoon so hopefully will get to put it on tonight after work. Again thanks for the info.
You might want to also take a bottle of soapy water and use it to find leaks in the hoses. The actual hoses are relatively thick, hard plastic wrapped in black rubber. I have confidence that the hoses are made to last. The fittings are prone to leaking, and the airshocks can leak as well.
I have had the EXACT problem...TWICE! *** end all the way down to the frame, compressor won't turn on, level sensors and lines all appear to be fine, fuses checked out, etc. Also had no "check suspension" light which is weird. Dealer diagnostics said "siezed compressor and failed relay"...we will fix your problem for $885.00! I said no thanks and did it myself. Found that the compressor was FINE and it was the relay. I discovered this when after installing a new relay from Ford and a new compressor from strutmasters it ran fine but would not pump up the back end. There was a small difference between the new compressor and the one I took out so, after messin' with a bunch of things and striking out I inspected the old compressor and it did not appear to be seized so I removed the new one and tried the old one (with the new relay in)...voila! Worked great for the last couple of months....Until last week and I'm back to owning a LOWRIDER. Exact same problem! I am assuming the relay is smoked again. I am having a local independant shop do some troubleshooting before I go and spend more $$ just replacing the effect versus the cause. FYI, the relay located in front of the right front wheel behind the bumper. It has a flat 4 prong harness that plugs into it and it's roughly the size of the average pager that attaches to your belt and has cooling fins on one side. This relay is $96 at your freindly Ford dealer.
Try a search back around early June if you need info on installation/removal - I posted somewhere on here how I did it - wasn't that hard. Good luck!
Finally got a chance last night to put the new compressor in ..worked great..rear of the truck rose up , I did adjust the shock absorber looking sensor in the back to give me a little more ride hieght, mine was sagging a little in the rear from the get go anyway, but just wanted to let you know everything is good, my EB is back to normal..thanks for the help here. 200 bucks for the compressor shipped to my door, brand new with a warrenty so I am happy now.
I hope your experience works out better than mine.
I odered a compressor for my 2000 Exp 5.4l v8, 4x4 XLT over night. I waited until today to post this because I wanted to give http://www.strutmasters.com a chance to respond to my inquires.
This is a web page of experience with tthe compressor and strutmasters.
Sorry you had so many problems with Strutmasters, I did not order mine through them I went to car-parts.com and found a place that sells them new with a warrenty....total was 210 shipped to my door, came with new compressor, new thing the lines plug into, it had 4 holes as well but has 3 plugs in it I am very satisfied with mine , bracket matched perfectly, harness plug, was perfect match, everything went together perfectly. Hope things work out though with you and strutmasters
Sucks when you have an experience like this. Still ahve not heard a word from Strutmasters. I jsut got off the phone with Mastercard and started the process to dispute the charge.
I am having the same problem with the *** dropping on my 97 EXP EB 4WD. When it does it rides like a rodeo bronco - even on smooth rodes.
My difference is: 1 out of 5 times I start the car the suspension works fine - for about 2 to 10 miles. In fact, sometimes tooling around town (stopping and starting) while running errands it runs fine all day. Other times I never here the compressor come on.
It seems like it would always be low - or the compressor would always be running if there were a leak.
BTW: the "Check Suspension" light comes on when the suspension is malfunctioning.
I still have 10K left on my Ford EXP warranty - and it covers electronic parts of the air suspension.
Any suggested causes and cures would be appreciated.
