alanscott, I agree it would be neater to catch all the fuel down below. But the fuel water seperator on my 96 will not drain without pressure in it. So thats the reason why I start the engine (mechanical fuel pump) to drain it a little to get the crud out, then shut the engine off. I leave the fuel in the filter canister for expediency, and I remove the cover to inspect the electricals and numerous small hoses under it and it is easier to get at the filter. Both are habbits from when I worked as a mechanic and was paid according to the book rate. Shure, there are more than one way to skin a cat.

Mine won't drain worth a hoot with the cap on, it forms a suction, that's why I pull the cap. I don't run the engine because I figure the vibrations might keep the water in suspension, I'd rather have it at the botton and be the first to come out.

that's the way i thought you were supposed to do it; take the cap off and drain the valve with the engine off. I thought the Ford Powerstroke manual recommended to drain with the engine off as to avoid risk of the spilled fuel igniting.
maybe my memory has gone bad, i don't know.

On my 1996 the cover is hinged and allows access without removal. On the advice from KRON INT'L in Lex. I bought their filter ($12) because they had had experience with the included lids splitting and leaking. Original is much better. Also slow removal is the key for minimal mess. otherwise it takes about 10 minutes including checking for leaks afterwards.
THeo, I believe your truck was made too heavy to be pretty.

I do mine every 5000 miles. When I hold the used one up beside a new one, it shows a whole lot of brown/black crud. I once went 10.000 and it was truly filthy.

But as for $15 to 27 bucks each?!!! What's with that. Try one of the big suppliers and order a dozen at a time.
