Hi all. I have '99 F-250 SD with a 5.4. I can start it up just fine but after driving just a few miles it starts to sputter like its missing a cylinder. In the past I got the dummy light when s cool pack failed but no light this time. It starts off with a little sputter but in just a few minutes it get to the point where o can barely accelerate. There is also some back firing going on when it's at its worst. I had codes saying "Bank 1&2 too lean". I checked the vacuum system and found one off on back side of manifold. I fixed that, no codes but it still does the same thing. Any suggestions? Thank you
If you are getting banks 1 & 2 lean, look at fuel pressure. Check to make sure you are getting the appropriate fuel pressure for your engine. Symptoms of low fuel pressure include occasional surging, a generally smooth idle but a stumble when trying to accelerate, increased stumbling when engine under a load.
Thank you for all of the advice. I think you were all correct with your answers. First if found a major vacuum leak, the repair did not solve the problem. I then took the truck and drove it at around 50Mph, that's the speed it ran the worst. I drove until I finally got the check engine light. Multiple misfire, bank2 to lean & cyl 6 misfire. Replaced coil on #6, it runs better but still has a minor sputter. I believe intake might be leaking. Again, thank you.
