Just bought my first Bronco
Monster had a post about backup lights not working and I have the same problem. I just bought an 83 inline 6 300 4x4 from a friend for $100.00 clams and I knew going into the deal it needed work.
Amazingly though, when I took it to get it inspected the only things wrong with it are the backup lights/blinkers, and the rear driver's side E brake cable.
Now, someone replied to monsters post saying that it was probably the backup light switch on the tranny. I checked the wiring diagram and traced the purple/orange wire from the fire wall to the b/u light switch and found an 8 inch short in the wire. Where it had gotten hot, it had melted the sheath from both wires and both were grounding to each other. I cut back as far as I could to get to good wire and ran two new pieces to the switch.
I then put in a 15 amp fuse and tryed it out. The blinkers worked fine, but when I put the stick in reverse, the fuse blew.
Now, when I put in a new fuse, as soon as I turn the key over with the tranny in nuetral, with the blinkers off, the fuse blows.
Could this be the b/u light switch? I mean, would the b/u light switch cause this to happen? and if it is a short farther up the wire, where do I find a new connector to splice to the new wire that will fit the new switch?
Also, the hazard lights blink wonky. When you pull the switch out it blinks really super fast, gradually slowing until it reaches a slow, normal rythum.
FYI, I have changed both flasher relays in the fuse block.
I am hoping that this problem does not stem from the turn signal switch, as that would be a little more expensive.
Thanks for your help.
