351w or 302?

351w or 302?
I bought a 1970 f100 swb last week for 850 bucks and guy said it was a 360 fe, after getting it home and looking at it I knew it wasn't a 360, I'm just wondering is there any distinct difference or anything that could help me ID my motor with out having to take it apart because of how good it runs, any info or tips? Also, either way, what is the cheapest yet most effective way to get the engine to perform better. Thanks in advance.

How many bolts hold the valve covers down?
Are the valve covers rectangle or trapezoid? (====) or /===\
Better performance options are best discussed once we figure out what you have, and what your budget is, and what condition this engine is in. Trans, and the rest of the truck would be important too. Why bother with a performance motor if it's a rust bucket for example....

6 bolts would be 302 or 351W. The valve cover ends are angled, right, like so? /====\
The t-stat cover is bolted to the front of the intake, right?
Can you put a socket on the lower t-stat cover bolt? (351w) Or is it below the top of the water pump? (302)

yes i can get the socket on the thermostat housing no problem, and the fuel pump bolts are side to side so does that mean that its also a 351w instead of a 351c? cause i havnt heard of stock 351w with 4 speed in 1970.

A 351W block has a large vertical cast rib on the driver side of the distributor hole. 289/302 does not.

It's deffinently a 351w, took replaced valve cover gaskets and now #5 cylinders intake lifter is collapsed

Hio, the 335 series engines (351M, 400) have the rib on the block, not the Windsor. Just verified with my son's 79 400 powered F-250.

The 351W has a triangular rib (and webbing). The 351M/400 has about a one-inch tall horizontal rib.
