I always thought I had to have a dog that could be trained to protect my family and possessions. So over the years (30 plus) I've had Rottweillers, German Shepherds, and Dobermans. Sure, they were protective, but were also a bigger and bigger liability. Truth is, people got bit and it was no fault of the dogs. They were just doing their job, but try and tell that to your insurance adjuster.

I finally got smart a couple years ago and purchased an American Bull Dog. His name is Harvey, and he's 120 lbs of love and affection. I've had him since he was 6 weeks old and have never heard him as much as growl, and he's the best watch dog, companion, I've ever had.

We have two black labs and a german shorthaired pointer.

They're all just spoiled rotten.

The oldest lab is 98 lbs. That's big for a female, but she came from large stock. She must carry something in her mouth almost constantly. I've had other labs, but this one really has to be carrying something to be happy. We always bring home something from a walk. Beer bottles, cans, gloves, hats, tree limbs and even a discarded christmas tree have made the trip home. One neighbor was laughing so hard at the size of the tree limb she had one day he almost drove into a parked car.

Smart Dog, Huh. Good Protection, Huh
When Dawg (See Avatar) hears something outside, she barks, gets behind me and uses her nose to push me towards the door.

Talking Your Pets

Good stuff people, I really liked reading all your replies. As I finished reading it all something popped into my head "Pet Shrink" What do you all think about them?

Personally I think that if my dog, Diego, ever has anything regressed that he'll either eventually crap it out, or cough it up like he does anything else. If not then it really shouldn't be a concern.

I am asking because my boss, we'll call her "Mrs. Chief" for our purposes, told me a while back that she actually thought about taking her dog, Australian Shepherd, I believe, to one these nut-jobs. Now this woman is a Military Judge, around 30 years of service, give or take, not really sure. I couldn't believe that she actually considered this. Am I alone on this or do you all agree that these people are just like any other scam artist and are just out to make a buck?

"Your dog didn't get enough tit when he was a puppy" Did any of us?

"When you tell him to fetch, he feels inferior" Are you for real!?!?
