C6 forward clutch assembly

I am putting together a C6. The current project is a 1985 F250 with a 460. The stamped numbers on the case show a 70's build. I know that I am not the first one in the transmission since it came from Ford ... but that is the extent of my knowledge on the history of the truck.

When I took it apart, I did my best to keep all the pieces in order but things took longer than expected and crap happens. I have identified all the parts with one exception. I have looked through the great posts on here ... some with pictures even. I have the Haynes manual and referenced a few shop manuals ... so now I am turning to the experts. I have two beveled steel plates for the forward clutch drum. The drawings say that one should be next to the beveled spring but the one outside of the clutches should be flat. I have read some on upgrades and garage adjustments for making the transmission act differently. This doesn't seem to be one of them. Did I mix up the steels without knowing and this second beveled plate belongs somewhere else? Or is this a previous owner's attempt to improve performance. I have found another core C6 which has the flat plate where I need it and quick look shows that it only has the one beveled plate.

Any help would be appreciated.

This is a way to add a extra clutch and steel for the drum, it came from Ford with a flat plate on top. The beveled plate is thin enough that you can add one more clutch and steel to the forward clutch.

I would reuse it like that if it was me, I have never seen it to cause a problem and it does get you one more clutch.

If the beveled plate is used in the direct clutch to gain the extra clutch and steel there might clearance issues with the forward drum.

Thank you for the quick response.

So just to get things straight .. the extra clutch makes the engagement more solid? And does that go bevel side into to clutch pack? or flat against the clutch and bevel out?

And then I take it we can add clutches until we see the right clearance?

Again, thank you for your help.

The flat side of the beveled plate sits on the clutch plate.

Adding a extra clutch and steel increases the surface area of the frictions, like wider tires has more traction and reduces the chances of slipping.

The clutch pack can be adjusted with thick and thin steels

Done and done ... the transmission is in. Hope to have fluids in and a test drive done this week. Will share my successes as soon as I have them.
