Well and good, but here's a stupid? question. CAN a power steering be made into a working non-power steering truck by removing the power steering unit, AND (here"s the big one) simply running intake to output on the gear box?
Probably not but I can't really afford to buy a new or remanufactured pump with housing. It seems that what is already there, or was. Is damaged by someone using the housing-read resivour to tighten the drive belt. I thought I could get away just changing the shart seal. BUT the shaft is not in good shape so I would soon be replacing it again. Possibly somewhere inconveniant. Can I just do away with the oump and run it with the seering gear lubed but blocked off? These are thoughts that come to mind. I can't afford to take it to a shop. I'm a shade tree mechanic, but it's been awhile since I worked on vehicles. Make fun if you want, but at least say yes or no.

With my experience, power steering that doesn't work is MUCH harder to steer, than manual steering. A new pump with reservoir from oreillys is only $43.00. It also has a cross reference say it works on 1600 different ford models and 500 different mercury models. Might be able to get one from junk yard.

That's by design. Power steering uses a different gear ratio for better responsiveness since it doesn't need to be easy to steer by hand. Manual steering is geared to make it driveable without the power assist. Simply disabling the power steering without swapping to a manual gearbox wouldn't be very safe, as the vehicle would be much harder to control at low speeds.
