Thanks to those of you who have offered your cyber-help. My '62 292 finally fired up last night, and runs smoother than I thought it could - doesn't even shake! Distributer was totally outta whack, and after checking three times, found two plug wires mismatched.
Good to hear it. Hope to see some photos soon, looks like you tried to get some in your gallery but nothing shows. I have a friend in Spokane he has a blue 55 and an orange 72. His name is Bob Mackee ever heard of him?
Don't know your friend, but I've been out of the street loop for a few years. I work weekends and miss the car shows, but I'll keep an eye out for his wheels. I boned the photo thing, sorry. I'm still trying to get it figured out. I'm still having problems with the engine though, that might be in the form of bad gas and/or a clogged Holly carb. We'll get it figured out.
Hey Jeff what are the symptoms? Fuel problems have only a few distinct symptoms. The car my buddy has that He'd take to cruise or shows is his 40 coupe I think its purple now.
Is your buddy in a car club? I'd like to have a 40 myself. I have pretty much done a total tune-up - new everything except plug wires, and they're hitting all plugs fine. Engine runs smooth as you can ask at idle. Ran ok under load, then after a few blocks down the road started missing. Re-gapped the points and they look a tad burned. Now will idle smooth for a short while, then start pooping out, eventual death. Will start right up agan, then poops out shortly again. Sprayed starter fluid around hoses, carb, intake, but really can't say for sure if there was any difference. Checked dwell, and is within specs, but as the engine starts going south, the needle rises. I have a Holly 650. PO says he put in an rv cam, and has a hot coil (looks like it's supposed to be wired to a brain box, but no wires are connected). Gas is old, but mixed with fresh. I've replaced the rubber fuel hoses and inline filter also. Thanks for your interest - I'm getting stumped.
If the gas smells like varnish you need to drain the tank completely and start with fresh gas. Old gas will crap up new gas. Put in a new fuel filter and check your fuel pump for pressure and volume using a gauge and a jar. Good luck, Rich.
Yeah, the gas was smelling pretty bad, but the fresh gas mixed with it is now thru the system; it doesn't smell so bad now. I will drain the tank, but I have to get a large enough container(s) first. Hopefully a couple empty 5gal paint buckets will do it.
