Hey guys im looking at a truck hopefully getting it this week. I will tell you im a chevy man but i do like obs ford diesels. This will be the first ford ive ever owned and i dont like to keep my junk stock so ill be on here learning any way to tear it up 😂😂
Its a 1990 f350 idi with a turbo on it im almost positive it said garret on the housing. Also has swaped the body and interior to the newer body im pretty sure from what i can find. Oh Its a 5 speed and 4wd
The inside could use some love but its a 90s truck so i wont complain. The only thing i know of that it needs mechanical wise is a glow plug relay or controller . You can jump the post and it will work
Let me know of some things i should look at when i go to get it i went and drove it and it runs very good
No i cant say i am i have always had a gas chevy around the house i have a 2003 chevy suburban right now and a 66 chevy c10 project truck
This will be my first diesel truck so i deffinantly have alot to learn
Well, I used to be a gasser guy til 2007. Then I bought a TDI and IDI and never looked back.
Diesels aren't so bad. Just stop thinking like a gasser, and you'll be fine. Read up on SCA's. Read up on IP's. Read up on injectors. Don't equate glow plugs to spark plugs--that's a classic rookie mistake.
Any reason why you are buying a dualy? Plan on doing a lot of towing and hauling? If not, you might be buying an oversized truck for lots of fuel usage.
These IDI's can be pretty efficient (compared to gasser big-blocks, if you are used to 454's or 460's) getting around 13-15mpg. I suspect that dualy is gears for power, so it'll probably sit in the 14mpg range with that manual tranny. You can tune it, but it will probably max out at 16mpg.
Never trust what the PO is saying. His claim about the GP controller might be wrong. The fact that you can jump it though, might make his claim correct.
When you test drive it, look for "blow by." Check how it smokes at idle, and when you stomp on it. Does it smoke up a hill? Check the coolant--ask the owner if he runs SCA's. when did he change the IP last? when did he change the injectors? They need to be replaced every 100K. Is he runnin motorcraft GP's? If not, get them out asap. Read the stick on how to do it, so you don't break the cheapo autolites off. how old are the batteries? you need strong batteries to turn these old beasts over. the rest is all the same as gassers (rear axel, frames, body, etc etc etc)

Honestly i have always just wanted a dually 4x4. I do tow a good bit dragging my suburban home after i break it. I have read a tonnn of info the last few days i read an hour on sca's just last night and will deffinantly add them and check them when i go to get it. I will deffinantly go through and test everything in the glow plug system before i throw parts at it thats to much money. I will be upgrading injectors and ip once i figure out what would be a good set up. and i have to figure out exactly what the turbo is thats on it. Is there a way to tell what year the motor is off the top of my head i think it had a serpentine belt on it and not v belts
Well i got my loan today so hopefully ill have a truck today im walking around work happy as could be trying not to do hill clicks im so damn happy. So ill have lots of pictrues and ill disect the part numbers to see everything i have on the truck i have lots of questions but ill hold them off till i get the truck and try to answer them myself. Be ready i get picture happy 👍👍
Okay so i drive the truck home and on the way home and lost the accessory belt it is the serpintine style what year did ford swap to serpintine? Trying to figure out what all i have cause the trucks kinda piced together. The belt took out the power steering line and i had to get a 95 line but its a 90 truck by the vin. It does have a garret turbo i belive it says .70 ar If i remeber right could the motor be from a newer truck if so how could i tell what it is. The tach isnt working where does the gauge get its reading from. I ordered some 10 color light shift gauges with selectable warning points 4 pillar pods. Sorry for all the questions im new to fords so i dont know alot about them ill try to take some pictures tomorrow. I am replacing the tie rod it death wobbles!!! O also when did ford stop king pin axles cause i have one under this bad boy i thought they stopped in earlier years.
Gave her a little bath and added my fire stick antennas for my cb radio my glow shift gauges should be here tonight.
And hopefully ill pull out the grinder and cut the stacks down. i took off the flowmaster 40 that the guy had on there she sounds good now 3 inch straight in to 5 inch stacks
