Hello all. I just scooped up a great looking 1982 F100. All original for the most part. It has some ride issues but I've got all new bushings on the way.
One annoying thing is that it dies if I hit a speed bump slowly. Or any other big bump. Fuel pump?
Also can't get the tail gate down. Is there a way to take it apart to manually unlatch it?
1982 F100... what engine? Regardless, it'll be a mechanical fuel pump that wouldn't really be affected by a small bump like that, I'd be looking for bad electrical connections in the ignition system.
Tailgate - that sucks - three 10mm bolts in back of the latch and the latch can come out the front; there are two steel rods leading to the latch mechanisms on the sides you'll need to pull on manually.

Try replacing the starter solenoid. I had a 82 F100 as well and it would do the same thing on bumps. The solenoid must stay pulled in when running. Sometimes they get weak with age and will pull in enough to start the truck, but driving down the road a bump will cause the solenoid to drop out. To check start the truck and then go and wack the solenoid with your hand. I can almost guarantee that the engine will quit when you do this. Replace the solenoid and you should be all set.
