Crankcase ventilation
Years back I removed the crankcase ventilation from my air intake and ran it to a home made filter (with a hose) underneath the truck. While browsing the message boards for my Volkswagen diesel someone mentioned it being important to have the crankcase ventilation hooked up to the intake. Many of the folks there install clear tubing and a filter then round it back to the intake. Is this something I should be doing on my truck. Is it beneficial or crucial to engine performance or fuel economy to keep the crankcase ventilation hooked to the intake?
Thanks,
Al C
it also doesnt hurt performance to not run it into the intake. any "requirement" to send it into the intake is based on emissions. on a new diesel vehicle, NJ could theoretically fail you for venting crankcase gases to the atmostphere, but the state stations only ever hook into your computer systems and tailpipe now anyway (i used to live in NJ).
now, if you have added an intercooler to your truck (as all powerstrokes after OBS trucks have standard, and as us OBS-ers like to do when increasing power levels), you'd want to NOT run the crankcase breather into the intake as you'll eventually sludge up your intercooler and start affecting performance. i assume newer trucks subject to emissions testing run it through a filter into the intake as you suggest, or perhaps into the exhaust upstream of the cat...
hope this helps.

The volkswagens DO have an intercooler so that's probably why many folks like a filter.
I'm not worried about emissions. In fact I just scraped my inspection sticker off a while back. They don't test diesel emissions here anymore (or ever?)
Thanks again!
