Question sagging rear end

I have a 1998 Ford Expedition V8 four wheel drive, and the back end of the truck has started to sag. I was wondering if anyone had any idea what could be going on.

Thanks

Do you have the load leveling suspension or standard shocks/springs?

I have the load leveling suspension system. The rear end is no longer sagging but has now completely dropped.

Thank you for replying!

If the rear end has completely dropped, then it is likely a hose fitting located underneath the air filter housing. tends to crack and break. New part is about $22 from Ford. Remove the air filter housing and peek around - you should find the fitting that's broken.

Let me know if you need more precise directions. The air hoses look like black washer hoses, but they have hard, white plastic insides.

No problem. Take out the air filter housing (unfasten the "buckle holding the 2 halves together. Move the left half (that goes to the engine) left and out of the way.) The right half is held in by 2 clips underneath (just lift up) and the tube that pokes into the driver side fender (just pull it out). Now that the air filter's outta the way, look for a black tube that resembles a washer hose just sort of floating around in there. It passes through that area of the engine compartment on its way from the compressor to the rear air springs. In the area you're looking, the hose is joined by an inline plastic coupler that's about an inch long and cylindrical. The coupler tends to crack and fall apart. Happened to three of us on this forum, all within a month or so.

Chances are, one end of the hose fell out of the coupler when it cracked. To remove a hose that's in the coupler, just push the red O-ring IN TOWARDS the coupler, and the hose should just pull right out. To reinstall, just stick the hose back in there.

Sorry I couldn't be more specific, but this hose is literally just thrown in there - it's not held down by anything.

Let me know if I can help further.

I removed the air filter housing, but I did not see a hose, just wires. There is an air compressor on the other side of the engine next to the windsheild washer unit. Could this be the thing I'm looking for? I forgot to mention that this is an Eddie Bauer expedition, I don't know if that would make a difference in compressor location.

Thanks

Lest the Matt be gone to lunch, I'll throw in a little. My '97 has the compressor on the passanger side where the windshield washer resevoir is. I'll look under my hood. I'm too old to remember if my air filter is on that side or on the other on my Expy or Mountaineer. Just looked, mine is a 4.6L, the air cleaner is on the driver's side, the compressor is UNDER the resevoir on the passanger side. That is my limit for now but I'll bet the hoses/connectors/etc. Matt filled you in on are there close by but not real visible...

Good luck and I'll note this thread for when my hoses die...

Thanks guys for all your help, after inspecting the hoses and finding nothing wrong I tested the compressor, noticed it was not working. Took the compressor apart, cleaned it, then re-installed it. Turned the truck on and the rear end was back to its normal position.

Rock and roll.

If you end up needing a new one (at some point), there's a site called "strutmasters". They sell rebuilt compressors for about $150 and they fix the design flaws as well. Apparently a new compressor from FoMoCo costs $600+ or so.
