hi ya im new here got a problem with a 85 f150 ;. its a 300 l6 with the 4 speed manual an the problem i have with it is the shifter keeps breaking off at the base of the shifter where it meets the floor . the shifter handle is steel an the base is alumium an it keeps breaking off at that point ,iv had this happen now twice .not fun to go for another gear an the shifter falls in your lap . id like to know if some 1 else has had the same problem an what can i do it help fix it .i need to fix it again so id like to have some help on what to do to solve it before i have to have it fall over a 3rd time .tks in advance fo any info u have .
ok the shifter is in 2 peices the bottom is made from alumium at it comes up to the floor board an the top half in the cab is steel an right where they meet it keeps breaking off . i have to dig the old alumium out an hammer the steel part of the shifter back down over it
if you have the 3sp od manual all it is is a couple bolts that go through the shifter and the aluminum piece. I had the same thing happen to me while i was drivin around town.
If FORD made a crapy 2 piece shifter like that (Aluminum bottom where the fulcrum for the lever is and steel top that does not need to be stronger than the bottom) I would think there would be an upgraded part perhaps?

Same thing happened to me. Go down to the junk yard and
get an earlier shift stick. They are usually one piece and the
**** screws on. Now if you can tell me how to put the stick
into the transmission without using brute strength, I like
to know.
it is the 3 sp with the od . just like to fix this while i got the truck off the road for a bit . so im just trying to advoid going to ford an getting another 1 a friend of mind had it happen to him an he had to get it from ford an its big bucks so just tring get away with any idea some 1 else might have on how to fix it . tks every 1 so far for the info
When the shifterr breaks, does it just rotate, or does it come off completely? Id it rotates then there are to holes just below the rubber boot that are suposed to have to bolts in them.
