Talking Mount Scanner on top of dash

Just got done mounting my scanner in the truck. Here's some quick pointers in case anyone else wants to as well. Remove the top tray (on top, middle of dashboard). To perform that removal, carefully pry upward on the tray edge facing toward radio side. That will unsnap the 2 plastic clips and allow you to peek underneath a little. Do not try to unsnap/pry the edge near the windshield.

Next using a small screwdriver, pop up the speaker grille which is held by 4 plastic clips. Pry up the grill in front and in back and you can remove it. Now you will see two 7 mm bolts, near the windshield edge. Unscrew those and this allows the top tray to be completely removed. You will need to unplug the speaker wires.

I removed the rubber pad from the top tray and drilled some holes for the antenna coax, 12V and mounts. For the antenna, I purchased a coupler from Antenna Specialists that allows me to tap into the factory FM antenna coax line. That coax runs from the passenger side, fender mounted 31" antenna through the firewall, behind the glovebox, to a SAT/RF combiner and preamp unit (I never did find it, but it's behind the dash someplace). I know because the antenna connector on the rear of the radio looks like a micro USB plug with plastic around it and no Orange coax there. Anyway, the coax behind the glovebox is Orange and you can best access it by swinging the glovebox down (squeeze left side of glovebox to lower it).

I then cut that Orange coax, installed 2 F connectors on it and tied it into my coupler. I had to install a few more F connectors and some F-81 barrels to match everything up.

For 12V, I ran the positive through a 3 Amp inline fuse to the passenger fuse box inside the kick panel. I also picked up a ground near that fuse box. The scanner works mint and the FM radio works fine (no noticeable degradation of signal).

Good luck,

Paul, I am trying to mount a CB radio in my truck, and the choices are pretty slim. I've considered the tray area on top of the dash, but am leaning towards the passenger side of the stupid console that extends all the way to the instrument panel. Any chance you could send me some pics of your installation? Also where did you mount the amber strobes you mentioned in another post?

Thanks,
David

2015 Ford F-150 Scanner Install - The RadioReference.com Forums

The LED Mini3 strobes are mounted under the rear bumper using L brackets to the existing bumper bolts.

Take care,Paul

The round lighted switch in the picture controls the strobes. The strobe flasher unit is behind the drivers side rear back seat. Running the wires was a major pain in the a_s.

Thanks, looks like a nice setup. I had 4 hide-a-way LED amber strobes on my 450, but I don't think I'll be mounting them on the new 150. The 4-way flashers are 100% better than any I've ever had on a pickup. And I don't stop along the road nearly as much as I used to.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the info. I want to run the power for my Garmin GPS up to the top of the dash. This was the info I needed.
