Driving down the highway, close to 60 mph, the lights began to dim, and finally the engine cut out on me. Tried to pop it into gear to get it moving again, but no luck. Tried to turn it over again on the shoulder, but just clicks. There was barely enough power in the battery to run the lights. Ended up getting towed back home.
I am running a 68 f100, and think it might be time for a new alternator, but if I can get away with just the voltage regulator, I won't complain. Appreciate the help, John.
As a side note, if you are ever towed make sure the guy mounts his hazard lights, the cop that pulled us over on the way home didn't appreciate they were missing.
Well, you can have a working alternator & regulator and still have the battery be the problem.
The ignition system needs 8 volts to operate.
This power can available in battery with 4 out of 6 cells.
Batteries can develop a short inside themselves.
Charge the battery up with a battery charger and try it again.
Take the alternator off and get it checked. I have never done this but supposedly it's free. While your taking it off, you may stumble upon a loose wire somewhere.
I was finally able to take a look at it today, and it turned out that there was corrosion on the wires to the Voltage Regulator. I took a wire brush to them, and gave it a boost. After 15 minutes the battery was charged, and everything was nice again. Thanks for the help, John.
