Unhappy Help guys-ECM!???

Day before yesterday in my 97 Ford PS on my way home from work my cruise kept coming on and off about every 10 secs. Then after another 20 or so miles my tranny (Which usually runs @1900 RPM @ 70 or 75 mph) was bouncing about every 10 seconds up into passing gear @ 2400 to 2500 RPM>then back down. Well confused -so i figure out that i must have sensor for tranny or a short somewhere... Take it to the electricians shop and his analysis is the ECM is out - It will take two days for the (money hungry) Ford house to get the computer in and he says that he doesnt install after market ECM'S because they always seem to go out especially after a year or so -Has anyone ever had a after market ECM put in their truck? And if so have they ever heard of this happening to someone? Going out? I am not one to shorten on my truck but if I am going to spend this much money I would certainly like to be sure!! I really like to do all the work on my trucks but this one I have to leave to someone else and am kind of upset how he just shut me down on even the thought-- Any help is appreciated -THNXS

Help guys-ECM!???

Aftermarket ECMs for the Powerstroke are remanufactured Ford units. How good the unit is depends on what was wrong with it before it was reman'd.

If I were a Ford dealer I wouldn't install aftermarket ECMs as they have no warranty recourse with them. Look at it from their point of view, they are in business to sell and repair, not to put in someone else's product.

Help guys-ECM!???

I'll bet you have a bad Transmission Range Sensor. They tend to fail at high mileage and cuase symtpoms like you are seeing.
