Hey everyone. I just purchased a 79 f150 ranger xlt with a 351m and a t18. On the ride home something went wrong with the tranny. The clutch seems to work fine but when it starts to roll it sounds like the gears are grinding only the forward gears reverse works fine though. Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?
It is hard to help you out without having more specifics in your message.
I know the shifter mechanism could rattle at times in these trucks sounding like some gear grinding...typically 3rd gear.
If you are lugging the engine the transmission will make a gear grinding type sound.
You do know 1st and reverse have no synchros so they will grind when placing them into gear sometimes.
It would be odd if you had any actual serious internal problems to cause a true gear grinding noise. If there was serious trouble inside I think you would have had serious issues driving or even letting the clutch out in neutral. Even with the clutch engaged and transmission in neutral all the gears in the transmission are turning, just none of them are locked to the output shaft.
I have noticed that first and reverse do grind sometimes but this sounds like when you try to put it in gear without pushing the clutch in but it only does it when l let the clutch out and try to move forward. It will lurch forward then start grinding. All my forward gears do it. I will try to change the fluid this weekend and see if that does anything.
Does it keep moving while this sound occurs, or is it essentially popping out of gear? How were you able to drive it home if it happens in all 4 forward gears? Did you have to get a tow?
It seems weird that the forward speeds would have an issue and reverse wouldn't. I would say something is wrong with the shift fork assembly in the transmission cover with reverse being the only one that works. It is like the shift collars are not sliding into position when you move the shifter. I just don't see how you could have serious transmission damage and not hear it at idle or while in reverse.
You sure the sound isn't coming from the rear axle? Busted teeth on the rear end could cause a heck of a bang and grinding if you try and give it some throttle. Maybe going in reverse you aren't giving it much gas and the change in rotation of the gears makes it less likely to slip?
