Tire question

Ok this is a dumb, silly, goofy question for most of you, but since I don't know or never cared before getting my truck I'll ask anyway?

What do all the numbers on the tire size mean?

Also I noticed that the tires on my truck are P265 instead of the P235 stated in the owners manual, what's the difference? Will this have an affect on the way my truck drives, gas mileage, Etc.?

Should I go back to the owner manual recommendations?

P is for Passenger or the least amount of ply rating. the 265 is mm wide so the tire is 265mm wide, next number, probably 70 or 75 is aspect ratio so it is the percentage of the width i.e. P265/75 means the sidewall is 75% of the 265mm tall or roughly 199mm sidewall height, last number is your rim size. You'll have slightly more resistance with a tire that s 30mm wider so technically less mileage but it also raises your effective gear ratio since the tire is taller, that has more to do with the mileage than anything, and your odometer will also be off.

Ideally your truck should run the tire recommended on the door sticker.

I recently went back to the stock size on my daily driver and the performance was better overall.
