I recently bought a decent looking 1999 ld f250 4x4 with a 5.4 and auto transmission. the tranny needs to be replaced .it has no forward gears in any position and only reverse works. what can I swap this tranny from ? I will probably buy a donor wreck or a rot box running truck to swap it from. are the 2 wheel and four wheel trans the same . I have been running 7.3 idi diesel trucks for the last 10 + years. Don't know a lot about this body style . Any help would be appreciated. thanks guys

 

you need the 4x4 tranny as the transfer case bolts to the tailhousing on the tranny. the 2 wheel drive trannys don't have the correct tailhousing. not sure what would be involved in swapping over tailhousings or if even possible.

also there are two different trannys the 4r70w and the 4r100. check the tranny code on the data plate to see what one you have (probably the 4r100 as it is a F250, but not 100% sure on that)

Chances are it's a 4R70W. Most, but not all, 5.4Ls were 4R70Ws in the LD F-250.

Tailhousings may be swapped. That's easy. The output shaft must also be swapped. That involves a complete teardown of the transmission.
