Ignition Conversion
My 1966 F100
Bone stock 240, what a powerhouse
I am considering converting my point type ignition to a pertronix or a duraspark system. The duraspark looks cheaper to obtain as my local pick a part has many to choose from but I am clueless about the conversion. I assume the 300 is a direct swap for the 240.
Great looking truck!!Once priced out don't believe one will find there's much difference in cost. I went with the Dura Spark ll but it requires wiring in a circuit for the system; whereas, with the Pertronix, I understand the main advantage is its ease of installation. The topic comes up on occasion and seem to recall majority, if not all, of the member's who swapped over to Pertronix are very pleased with the conversion. I am certain other member's will be chiming in with comments and advice, you will be please with either Electric Ignition system, no longer a task to start the engine on a cold winter morning. Again, welcome, looking forward to your input.
Came across a 'testimonial' thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-ignition.html
When the new one worked no better I went to new DSII dizzy. Because I like to tinker with what isn't broken I found threads about using GM HEI modules instead of the DSII modules. Easy wire-up and runs a charm. But you could go either way. The amount of wiring is about the same. The only reason I'm doing DSII and GM module on my new 66 352 is because it is so easy and I needed a new dizzy anyway. I had a Mallory dual-point dizzy on it and needed a new stock one, and a later model FE DSII dizzy on RockAuto was cheaper than a Pertronix kit and a GM module is cheap as well. Though this time I put the module in a DSII box.
[Edit] I think with all the stock points stuff intact, the Pertronix is easier to do. You have to get switched 12 volts to the red wire while running the coil off the resistor wire of the stock system (the coil isn't made to see 12 volts all the time). DSII is a 6 on the 10-point difficulty scale and Pertronix a 2. That may help you decide as well.
It is tall but its 100% trouble free and for 75 bucks it was a pretty sweet upgrade.
