Well, so I put in the new starter today and when removing the old one I found: the top mounting bolt was loose, literally just finger tight; and one of the long bolts that holds the housing together was sheared off and just sitting there. Put in the new one and she started right up. Literally, almost as soon as I turned the key the engine started. No more holding the key to start position and hoping she'll turn over. Now, on the bad side, I picked up a new starter from Auto Zone, yep, made in China, but I just couldn't afford to get a Motorcraft starter right now. Hopefully it will last another 11-12 years or more and I won't have to worry about it...at least for now.

Thanks for all the help!
Glad it worked out for you. I'm pushing 70 and dread having to call under and change mine. It's been raining everyday this week so things are pretty mucky.
The motorcraft starter and autozone are almost the same price. My guess is the motorcraft is also made in china. I will buy the 'new' autozone starter also.
My experience with Autozone is you'll be lucky if it lasts 12 months, but good luck with it.
Also, it might be a good idea to check your starter bolts in a month or two. Not really sure why, but the trucks that have problems with loose starter bolts always seem to have the problem repeat itself. From what we've seen, it's only on the trucks with 4R100 transmissions, but not all of them.
New starter installed major improvement spins like a 4 cyl car now. Easy starting. Failure mode must be is just gets slower and slower. All is well hope it last another 15 yrs.
