I have a 1952 F1 with a 351w and c4 transmission. I also have a 1986 5.0 roller motor that I would like to install. What problems would I run into? I am aware of the balance issue, but, have heard the c4 could have one of 9 different bellhousings. Yikes! Thanks
I don't think you'll have a problem. Most of the different bellhousings are on the earlier models, 5 bolt, 6 bolt, different flywheel teeth count, etc. If it's from the 351, it should have the larger 164 tooth bell, which is what the late models ran. Use the same block plate and starter as you're using now, get the correct balance flexplate for the 5.0 (making sure the tooth count is the same) and you should be in business.
Most c4's have a 157 tooth flywheel. I would bet that's what's behind your 351. You'll probably need a 157t 50oz flywheel to run behind the 302 but you won't know till you split the two and measure the flywheel
Almost all the SF engines (older 289s thru 351C) have the same bellhousing bolt pattern including straight 6s. Balance of your flexplate & number of teeth will be your issues. I'd try to keep the Flexplate from the 5.0 if it's still available. Might wanna get the 5.0s starter as well.
