I'm looking into upgrading my alternator in my 1991 5.0L. engine.
I was wondering what brand that you guys recommend.
I'm currently running a remanufactured 100 amp alt from a mustang.
I'm currently running the 130amp alt. I got off ebay from Alterstart. I've had great luck with it, but the install was a slight bit more painful that I thought. I had to use a cold chisel to chop out a portion of the alternator bracket to get it to fit. However, it did come with the lil' plug and a new bolt, which helped the install a bit. I'd buy it again, if I had to.
Instead of using the big "prone to melting" plug, you take two eyelet wire connectors (10-12 gauge) for the main voltage wires, that then get mounted to the stud on the back of the alt. the wire left over attaches to the "lil'" plug, and inserts into the alt.
Now if you meant wiring elsewhere, I run a 2 gauge positive batt. cable, and a 4 gauge neg. batt. cable. All the other wiring, minus all my haphazard gauge wiring, is stock.
That pic should show all my larger wiring. Look in the back part of the pic for my fuse holder and 4awg alt wire. By the coffee can and jack. You can also see my 4awg amp wire too!
I plan to upgrade to a 180-200A unit before I swap to electric fans. I have a very slight undercharge at idle with the A/C on and the headlights and that would only get worse with 30A worth of fans.
I think 200A is more than enough. My slight undercharge now is b/c I still have a big ol' alternator pulley on there. I have a tiny 1.75" I need to install.
