Gunk on oil filler cap..gasket issue?
Hi all - I haven't been on the forum in a while 'cause I was between trucks but I just bought a 1993 F-150, V8 5.0 liter engine and could use collective wisdom here.
The truck runs well but whenever I buy a new vehicle (which for me always means a used vehicle), I give it the once over, which always includes an oil change no matter what the previous owner says.
When I removed the oil filler cap, there was some creamy gunk on it. I've always heard this means a head gasket leak. But the truck isn't showing any other symptoms. The oil came out black with no white or sign of water. The radiator was full and topped off. There was no milky sludge on the dipstick when I pulled it. And there's no white smoke.
The previous owner told me he hadn't owned the truck long and mostly drove it from his home to the local park and ride. Judging from the maintenance records I saw, it looked like less than 1,000 miles were put on the truck in the past year.
Could condensation cause this gunk? I do live in the very rainy Pacific Northwest, too. Not sure if that makes a difference.
Sorry for the long description, just trying to give enough info.
Totally love the truck, btw and plan to give it all the care it's been lacking.
