Cool Mercon or Mercon V

Well, the dealer flushed my tranny and filled it with Mercon yesterday. Everything is good again.

I bet I have one of the cleanest transmissions in town now.

Get this. Just for the fun of it, I bought a Haynes repair manual and looked to see what fluid they say goes in the 4R100. It says all 1998 and later trannys take Mercon V. It is kind of sad that there is so much misinformation about this subject.

I am just glad this forum is here and thanks to you all for your replies. It was a big help.

Mercon or Mercon V

I looked at my manual, it says the 4R70W box gets Mercon V, where the 4R100 box gets Mercon. Interesting that they give you this information, but don't tell you how to determine which one you have :-) I'm pretty certain that I have the 4R100.

Just thought I'd share perhaps the reason for the ambiguity in the marketplace.

Mercon or Mercon V

I received a message today on my answering machine from the customer service center at Ford dealer that put the wrong transmission fluid in my Expy. They wanted to know if I was happy with the service. I called them back when I got home and talked to the lady about what had happened. She was aware of the incident and said that the service manager had taken care of the problem. She said that the guys now know to read the dipstick to make sure the proper fluid is put in. Genius!

buzzard, I can't find this information in print. Would it be possible to fax me a copy of that particular page along with shop manual name, year, etc. My situation is about to get sticky. Ford seems to be behind me and indicates the dealer is wrong however they don't have control over specific dealers. This particular dealer indicates the fluids are the same, backwards dateable and has done no harm.

So far the dealer has changed their story twice now, I'd like to have the proof on paper rather than a forum discussion.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.....

If you have the owners manual that came with the truck, show them that and see how they justify its warnings against Mercon V.

Good luck mtblocker and be sure to let us know what happens. This is getting interesting!

ford tells the mechanics that you can put mercon v into
a merconIII trans , but you can't put merconIII into a merconV
trans. The difference is that merconV has friction modifier in it.

You are wrong. I have it in writing. Ford says you can't interchange Mercon and Mercon V with this transmission. Perhaps Mercon 3 and Mercon are different, I don't know. In my case, the dealership has now stepped up and agreed they are at fault. They now acknowledge these fluids can't be interchanged as previously assumed. Many of these dealers are making stupid assumptions. In my case, they will pay. The dealer is changing the fluid and will now be responsible for any future problems with my transmission. It's all black and white and easy to litigate. I think the fluid change will resolve the problem and I'll keep everyone updated. I've also gotten assurance the dealership will make the transmission right if the fluid change does not correct the problem.

Will when some of us gone to school they told us this. Its not a assumptions on the mechanics. its ford one tell us one thing and somebody else telling us another. Even are managers called around to find the right answer. When I do a trans flush I use the orginal fluid only. So I'm not telling anybody to use mercon V in their truck. use the mercon that is required don't take any chances.
