winter oil recommendations

This will be my first oil change I am doing on my relatively new to me 2003 Excursion 7.3l. I'm going to add either an ez oil drain or Fumoto. Oppinons? I spoke to a couple different Ford Dealers, and they both recommended different oil weights for the winter. I am in Grand Rapids, MI, and we really have not seen temps above 10 degrees for the last several weeks. Also, please give me your advice on the brand for oil and filter.

Thanks!

Full synthetic 5w40 makes a big difference starting the engine in the cold temps in my truck. I buy the Valvoline at NAPA, they have it on sale a couple of times a year for $19.99 a gallon. The Fumoto has been on mine for a few years & has not leaked so I believe it's a good idea. I always get the Motorcraft oil filter at Wal-Mart for $10

I'm just North of you in Tawas, Michigan. I feel the winter blues brother!!

I run 5w40 T6 Rotella synthetic with a fram UltraGuard filter.

Just did my change last week. Walmart 20 bucks a gallon and 14 for the filter.

You'll notice a huge difference on cold starts.

Yep, diesel rated 5W-40 results in much better cold starts over 15W-40. Motorcraft 10W-30 diesel was Excellent as well.

Fumoto drain valves work great IMO. Have had one on my F-250 for 10 years.

Im in the same boat. I switched to Rotella 5w40 full synthetic several years ago on my last truck. I will NEVER go back. It just runs SO much better with the synthetic. Cold starts are smoother and the engine will actually run without letting it warm up for an hour.

I switched to 5W40 Rotella T6 Synthetic last winter after my 01' had the romps on really cold days. (Didn't plug it in all the time) I have continued to run it year round in that truck along with the 03' I purchased in Jan. of this year.
I have sent in several oil samples on my 01' to Blackstone with great reports being sent back. After sending the last one in at 9,000 they told me that I could run it for 11,000 miles.
It's more expensive but the engine is quieter and it runs better.

I also run Rotella T6 year around. Before making the change a few years back, I would get the romps on really cold days. I run it year around and change oil about once a year as my mileage is about 6000 per year. We get the best of both worlds down here. Below zero in the winter and above 100 in the summer.

BTW, I'm in Kansas, but have a daughter in Grand Haven, MI.

I had been running Valvoline Premium Blue 15w-40 semi synthetic. It also had the romps when cold starting. I switch this year to Rotella T6 in the 5w-40. Its soooo much better. I will continue to run it year round also!!

Sorry for the late return. I do run it year round. I only put 5K on my truck last year. I would still pay the difference if I had to change it a couple of times a year.
