Hwy everyone,
First post here. I have a 1990 f150 xlt lariat 300 5spd with the single tank. This vehicle has been sitting since 08. I have replaced the fuel pump in the tank, cleaned out the tank and replaced the battery. She starts right up without problem (better so than my 06).. my problem is, she idles ok, with a hick up every now and again, when you stomp the gas it has a strong heist ion that almost causes the truck to die. When you pull out you have to ease into the pedal extra easy wind it up pretty good to change gears them ease into the gas extra careful. If you get into the gas a little too hard it will sputter and jerk, allowing this to continue, will cause the engine to die obviously. If your going up even the slightest hill it will sputter and jerk. Is there another fuel filter on this thing or any idea what I'm having issues with?
Then if you think it is a fuel delivery issue I would put a gage on the fuel rail pressure tap and drive it to see what the rail pressure is when the problem exists. I think the spec is about 60 psi - not sure - better check.
There is another fuel filter on the frame near the side fuel tank. You'll need a quick disconnect tool (I got one at Autozone, I think, most parts houses should have one) to remove the old one. I would buy a couple of filters and carry a spare with you for a while until you've run several tanks of gas through it. Even with the tool the filter will probably feel like it's stuck so try a couple of shots of PB Blaster or WD-40 or whatever to loosen all the crud and corrosion.
I went through the same rigmarole with bad gas in the rear tank on a '96 F150 and about a month after replacing the tank pump, cleaning the tank, and replacing the filter it started to stumble and wouldn't go past 60 mph on the highway. Replaced the filter and everything is back to normal.
Just picked up a filter, I asked about the disconnect tool, and they said this filter didn't need it, hopefully this does the trick. I'll update shortly. I just have to find the fuel filter first lol I don't recall seeing it on the frame rail, but might have overlooked it
Ok, got it replaced, it honestly took longer to get it on the lift than changing it. I started her up and the response is a tad bit better but still doing pretty much the same thing
I suppose it's possible the fuel lines themselves are restricting fuel flow but if you've replaced the pump/sending unit and fuel filter those would be the things that affect fuel pressure most.
No I havent, I'm not sure how. Think maybe just driving it would work? I put a bottle of injector cleaner in the tank, I was thinking just running that through the lines might clean it out since it's been sitting that long.
Do a search on how to pull codes from the EEC. You could have a bad TFI module, could be a bad MAP sensor, TPS...or it could be gummed up fuel injectors. Nice thing about the computer is it will tell you where the problems are.
Ok, tried to pull the codes, it would read.... no code at all, I repeated the steps listed in the book that came with the scanner multiple times. The books says if the light doesn't flash, repeat the steps, if the light still doesn't flash, you have a problem that needs to be repaired (DUH) see your service manual for "no codes" trouble shooting chart.
