81 f150 starter problem?

Hello all. Forgive me if this has been addressed elsewhere but I didn't see it when searching. So two days ago the starter in my 81 f150 4x4 automatic with the 302 went out. I removed it and replaced it with the exact same one at Napa. I had owned the truck for 2 years before this and never had any problems but looking back now the starter I took off had similar marks on it as the one above. Anyway I replaced it with a new one drove the truck home and called it a day. Fast forward to this morning and the starter won't engage I took it off and it looks like the case has been chewed up by something and when tested at Napa the bendix won't engage. So my question is twofold, what could be chewing the casing and could that ultimately be the cause of the amazingly fast demise of the new starter? I don't want to keep buying starters everytime I want to drive the truck and as such until i figure out what's going on I don't want to put the new starter in, which leaves me in a precarious position of not being able to use my 4wd vehicle in the middle of snow storm season. Any help would be most appreciated.

Looks like the flywheel/flexplate is hitting it. Did someone change the engine/tranny and forget to put the sheetmetal plate inbetween the engine and the transmission?

Good question. I have a feeling that they did I haven't looked under there since I pulled the starter but it would not surprise me to find stuff missing. I was afraid I would be pulling the transmission to fix the flex plate in the near future looks like it's a reality. Thanks for your help I do appreciate it.

Well today I crawled under the truck and as it would turn out that sheet metal piece was indeed not there. Subsequently I made a spacer for the starter so it clears the torque converter bolts which apparently was hitting the casing and it starts and runs fine now. I'll be hitting a junk yard in the near future to get the plate I need but until then this temporary fix should do the trick. Thanks for your help.
