I have a 86 F-150 4x4 reg cab long bed with a straight 6 and a 4 speed manual. This is my first truck, and unfortunately I cant find an owners manual. I would like to know if someone out there has a similar set-up and could tell me the name of the front and rear axels and the gearing. Any info would be very helpful
Andrew
You either have an 8.8 Rear (most Likely) or a 9 inch rear. If you have a cover on the rear of the differential housing (pumpkin) it is a 8.8. Gear Ratio and axle type can be determined by the tag on the door pillar or the tag on the axle itself. Dana 44 should be your front axle.
8.8 is not your gear ratio, it's the size of your crown gear. A good guess would be that the axle ratios are 3.55, but they came in 3.08, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10. Look at the rear axle code on the door jam tag. I believe that 18 is 3.08, and 19 is 3.55.
May be a Dana 44 TTB. Probably is. TTB means Twin Traction Beam.
Check the sticker on your door. I had a book here that detailed the axles but I cant find it. Get the codes and post them. Somebody will know what it is.
All '80-96 1/2-ton 4WD Fords have the D44IFS (TTB). There's not usually a code for the front axle, and when there is ("2"), it only indicates that it has an LSD.
The axle tag should have the ratio on it. The 9 inch rear was last used about 81 or 82 I believe.
Serving time, are you from America? I thought maybe your terminolgy was a little off because you were from another country. I know the British have some unusual names for car parts.
And hey, Beefy it realy doesn't elevate you any to put someone else down so be nice.
