Gents, just purchased a 73 EB and am about to undergo working to rid the rig of the rust problems. I'm not wanting to restore this to "new" but definitely do not want the rust spreading.
Will be replacing the floor pans, possibly other panels in the floor and maybe all of them eventually. Any recommendations on how to go about this? Sequence? Front floor pans are definitely the worse so I am thinking they will be first to go. Two owners ago someone riveted what seems to be a new floor to the inside of the bronco, only they didn't remove the rusted pans/sheet metal or weld it in. Lazy job for sure! but it did make it functional and shouldn't be impossible to reverse so I'm not too worried. Just don't want it spreading.
Another concern is treating the undercarriage surface rust. It's all over the chassis but doesn't appear to be any deeper than surface. I've done some research and have seen a lot of options out there on chemical agents etc that will treat the area but need some recommendations. I'm looking for a DIY project I can sand/grind then put coats on.
Rust repair on an EB tends to snowball quickly with front floor pans being the easiest to replace. I use Jeff's Bronco Graveyard pans as the beads match up very well. For the chassis, "some" like POR-15. Just pressure wash and paint over the rust. If you're not stripping to the bare chassis, wire wheel what you can, kill the rust with Ospho or Jasco Prep and Prime, and paint with Rustoleum in the quart cans with brush and roller, not rattle cans. It will get you down the road a few more years.
