Back in 87 I was rearended by a semi and fractured 2 lumbar vertebrae.2 years of physical therapy and lots of drugs and I'm fine now. Not. 3 spurs on one and one on the other. I say have the surgery and feel a lot better for years to come. My BIL just had carpel tunnel surgery and it was laproscopic. Two little cuts in the palms of his hands, maybe they can do that for you. Get well soon.
My cousin had a similar problem and he opted for the surgery. It worked for him almost instantly, no more pain and it took him about 5 weeks to feel like normal again. He had the surgery two years ago and has had no more problems so far. Of course everybody is different, but it worked for him. Good luck with yours, hope you become pain free soon!
My bit of advice--if you get the surgery, do exactly as they say during the recovery period. If they tell you to stand on your head in the corner and gargle peanut butter upside down, just do it for the exact time they say do it. The absolute worst thing is when a guy gets relief after surgery and doesn't rest and follow post-op instructions, and then he re-herniates the disc and is messed up for life.
