A crate 302 300hp/336tq can be bought from Summit Racing for $2700.

The 351 with 300/357 can be had for $3000.

351 and 352 = 4 x 3.50 bore and stroke.

The shortblock 302 or 351 runs about $1300.

A Windsor crate engine exceeds the 352 in hp and tq and is less costly to build.

Back the engine up with an OD transmission and the proper gears and you have a great balance in power/hp/torque/economy.

It all comes down to how much you want to spend.

I would love to drop a 302 or 351 into my 64 but at @ 3000 miles a year its just not cost effective and the 292 purrs like a kitty, although its way down on power.

As soon as it warms up Im going to investigate the low power situation. I don't know if it is timing, gearing, carb, exhaust or all of those factors together.

Hey Banjo, John brings up some good points about keeping what you've got. I guess in the consideration is how many miles/yr you will be driving your truck as a "daily driver". My '66 came with a 352/cruiseomatic. I've owned it for 5yrs. It's my daily driver at around 8K miles/yr. The 352 never got much above 8mpg. At the time gas was $3.50/gal+ so over the 3yrs I spent over $10K in gas.

After much research, and the fact that the 352 started using oil, etc. I decided to look for a fuel injected engine with an overdrive trans. I wanted enough power plus better fuel economy on a budget! Ended up finding a deal on engine/trans from a rear-ended '92 Mustang GT with 62K miles. It didn't need rebuilding. Got the computer and everything from the same donor. All told, I have around $2,500 in the swap, with relocating the fuel tank, aftermarket EFI harness, etc, but I did all the work myself and I probably got lucky on a few things.

The result for me is better performance than the tired 352 and around twice the fuel ecomony - gets 13-15 city and 16-18 highway. It didn't take long for the swap to pay for itself in my case.

In your case, you didn't say how your 460 does on mpgs but if you could tune it to get 12+, I don't think the swap would be worth your time and money, especially if you plan to avoid fuel injection and an overdrive transmission.

Also, depending on where you are in the healing process, you might not feel like tackling an engine swap at this time. You might be happier pumping gas in what you've got and drive it with a smile..... Just a little food for thought. Hope that helps a little.

No, the double hump Mustang pan works fine. It has 2 drain plugs and they are actually easier to access than the FE was. Plenty of crossmember clearance.

If decide to go w/ the swap; suggest look into supplier's warranty, a 6 month, or 90 day warranty does not make sense. Purchased 302 long block 8 years ago thru rebuild shop out of the state of Washington, crated and delivered at around $1600, with a 7 year warranty or 70K miles, now would run around $2000 delivered. Suggest check around for shops warranty, longevity, and customer reviews.

Everyone:
I cannot express how much I appreciate each and every post in this thread.
You have given me once again a view of the friends I own here.

As John said, I have terminal cancer, and may have six months, maybe a year or more. We do not know enough yet to make a valid prognosis.

In the meantime, I guess I overthought my Slick, as it is one of the few things that still brings be pleasure - outside of my family, of course.

I was hoping to just buy a car or truck with a running 302 or C4 (maybe AOD) and just drop it in as is. But as was pointed out, I may not have the strength to do it, so I may need to leave the 460 in.

Still thinking.

Thanks again, and I will keep you all posted how it goes.

Sorry to hear about how bad things are, I read something about an illness.
I will keep you in my prayers as well as many other members will also I believe.
When you get settled back at home, there may be some better news for treatment, and hopefully some members nearby can lend a hand with the heavy work in whatever you decide to do.
Good luck Bob
